When designing the small guest bedroom at this vacation home of ours, I wanted to go bold. I wanted to bring in rich colors, patterns and textures to make the small space feel cozy and inviting.
I started with a stunning pink chinoiserie wallpaper and elevated it with the richest hues of bedding thanks to our partner for this post, Tuft & Needle.
With the holidays approaching, we’re excited to start inviting friends and family to join us in this space for the first time to enjoy it… and get a good night’s sleep too!
Deep ochre and green tones for bedding, a little rust for curtains, some cream tones in our rug and sheets to balance everything out against that striking pop of pink.
And of course, the coziest piece of all, our favorite Mint Mattress from Tuft & Needle. Here’s how we brought it all together!
Before & After
You can see the before and after transformation of the space below!
First, here’s a before…
And after below!
Quite a difference, yes? Let’s dive in to how we made it happen!
Choosing Bold Bedroom Colors From Chinoiserie Wallpaper
When decorating a room, I like to start with one element that I can pull a few color reference points from. Our pink chinoiserie wallpaper was it! Within it’s mural-like pattern were shades of yellow and gold in the lemons, browns in the trees and greens, rusts and even blues in the birds and other details.
This was the overall color palette I decided to work with as I chose the decor! First, let’s talk about the largest and most important element of the room, the bed!
Tuft & Needle Mattress Review
After a TON of research, we bought a Tuft & Needle Original Mattress for our son’s big kid room when we moved him out of a crib because it was Greenguard certified and was at a great price point. And as it turns out, we all absolutely love it. So when we were working on this home, we reached out about working together and were so excited to try out their Mint Mattress this time!
Here’s a few fast facts about their Mint Mattress:
- Removable, washable cover that zips right off
- Topped with T&N adaptive foam which contours to your body
- Designed to keep you cool with a layer of ceramic cooling gel built in
Just like the original, we love the Mint Mattress. It’s so comfortable, the delivery and unboxing process was seamless, and the added foam reduces movement so you can get out of bed with less disruption to a partner.
You can check out Tuft & Needle’s options here. We can’t recommend them enough!
Cozy Bedroom Sheets & Bedding
We also had the opportunity to try out Tuft & Needle’s bedding. You can see the beautiful colors pictured here!
For the top of the bed, we went with their new hemp bedding line. We got the Hemp duvet cover in Honeycomb and it is the most stunning golden yellow color. Hemp is a biodegradable material that’s lightweight and has an almost linen-like feel. We’re so happy with it!
I wanted to bring some more green into the room, and add an alternative to the duvet option for guests, so I also added their reversible quilt in Oxford Moss. It has a great, subtle stripe reverse side!
For sheets, we went with 100% organic cotton jersey sheets. These are SO soft and super low maintenance (designed to not wrinkle!) which is great for getting a guest room ready quickly! The color we chose is called Oatmeal.
Wood & Brass Furniture Accents
Since I chose bold colors for the bedding, chinoiserie wallpaper and curtains, I wanted to stick with deep wood and brass tones for the other elements of the room.
I sourced narrow vintage French wood nightstands to fit the space and added brass lamps on top.
Since the room is so small, there was not much room for other functional pieces of furniture, so I simply created a small vignette with an antique 1920s wood chair and stool that were both flea market finds.
Stacks of books and branches or dried flowers make for great accents throughout a room that require no maintenance (like actual plants) which is ideal for a guest space.
Rattan Closet Doors
This room had large mirrored closet doors when we bought the house. I had already replaced mirrored closet doors with DIY bifold closet doors so I decided to do that again. This time I wanted to try a rattan element like I’ve done on this rattan daybed makeover and this media console hack.
I took four sets of unfinished bifold doors and had them installed together to fill the large space, stained them a dark walnut and then added abaca cloth over the mirrors to bring texture into the space.

Hi Kelly,
Love the room! I have a question about the rug. How is it to vacuum? Love it, but am worried I would have a hard time vacuuming without the long shag getting caught in the vacuum. Ha! Anyway love your style and as always love to watch your family from afar! Great now I sound like a creeper!
