We’ve talked about baby names that end in a, but what about baby names that start with a certain letter? Many families, and cultures, choose names starting a specific letter to honor a family member. Today, we’re talking baby names that start with J!

Anna Lee H has one child named Milo and is currently expecting! Here’s what she’s looking for in a name for her next babe:
“We don’t like generic names and prefer something original. A name with 2 syllables goes well with our last name. A name that starts with J (Jewish tradition to honor a past family member). Nothing biblical like Jacob. Thank you!!”

Baby Names That Start With “J”
We all know the more common “J” names like Jeffrey, Joseph and several variations on John. Here’s a selection of “J” names that you may not come across as often:
- Jameson
- Jaron
- Jasper
- Jaxon (Jax)
- Jensen
- Joaquin
- Johnson
- Jonah
- Jones
- Jonte
- Jori
- Jude
- Julian
- Junior
I’ve loved watching the name James have a bit of a comeback as a middle name recently. But it’s perfect for a first name, too. Here’s a few more favorite “J” names that are largely uncommon:
- Jade
- James
- Jasmine
- Joanie
- Joie
- Johnnie
- Jolene
- Jordan
- Josie
- Jovie
- Jubilee
- Jules
- Juna
- Juniper
- Juno
I love using nicknames as names, like Joanie (instead of Joan), Johnnie (instead of John) or Jules (instead of Julia or Julianne). I actually have a brother who is just named Jeff, not Jeffrey!
What are your favorite “J” names?

My favourite ‘J’ name has to be my son’s name, Jesse. It’s not very common here in the UK. He is named after my paternal grandfather who was actually called Arthur but went by his middle name, Jesse! My dad’s name was Jerry which was short for Jeremy.
Kelly says
My Grandma and Grandpa both went by their middle names too! Jesse is a great name!!
Julia says
Hi! My hubby and me are Js so we went foe it with all our kids. My three boys are called Jake, Joah and Jamie. Jake and jamie are named after characters in my fave TV show, lol. We only found the name Joah during my second pregnancy with my twins and I absolutely love the name!!! I think it is so special and not often used, yet not too complicated. Maybe Anna Lee likes it too! 🙂

Congratulations, Anna Lee! So sweet that you’re honoring a family member this way. Here’s my suggestions:
Girls: Jocelyn (Latin for joyous, nickname Joss for luck), Jaime ( French for “I love.”), Janna (Hebrew for gracious, merciful) Janet ( French for of Jane) Jolan (Hungarian for violet blossom) and Julissa (Latin form of Julia, meaning young)
Neutral: Jada, Jaden, Jadon (Hebrew God has heard) Justice
Boys: Jagger (Eng for carter) Jaguar (Spanish for… jaguar) Janson (Scandinavian son of Jan) Jareth (American Jared + Gareth) Joram (Hebrew) (Jehova is exalted) Jorell (American, He saves), Jovan (Latin Jove-like, majestic. Also a Slavic form of John)
Happy choosing, and may your pregnancy journey and delivery be a smooth one. Take care!

Our oldest daughter is named Jerra, after her Grandfather, my father Jerry. We simply dropped the y and added the a. She is now 28 + LOVES her name! And the story behind it.
Anne says
I love James and Juno from your list. I also like the name Jack and Jazz, but as I understand it they were looking for longer names. The letter J is somewhat difficult but the Swedish names Johanna and Justus make work in English as well.

My daughter is called Juniper. We call her Juni and I love her name so much!
