This DIY pineapple costume is a quick costume to make by just pairing a DIY headband with a yellow outfit from your closet.
It’s a great last minute costume that will make a big impact and surely win you the best costume award at your party, school or office!
Supplies Needed To Make This Costume
- Yellow Dress
- Pineapple Hat Template – Printed on 11×17″ paper
- Green Poster Board (You can usually find this in the multi-color packs at office supply stores.)
- Toilet Paper Roll (I used a craft cardboard tube but it’s the same thing!)
- Headband or Ribbon
- Hot Glue Gun
- Scissors
How To Make a DIY Pineapple Costume
Cut out all your leaves from your green poster board (one large sheet was all I needed) using the template provided above. Curl each of the top of the leaves slightly by running your fingers over the tips. Once everything is cut, it’s time to start gluing! Hot glue the four largest leaves around the cardboard tube, covering the entire tube. Curl each leaf around the tube and hold until dry.
Now move to your second largest leaves. These should be glued just below the top of the cardboard tube (not all the way to the bottom of it like the first ones). Repeat the same steps you used for the first set, placing each leaf so it covers the seams from the layer before.
Repeat this process, using consecutively smaller leaves and working your way down the cardboard tube until you reach the bottom. So you can actually wear it, I recommend using ribbon or a headband. For the headband, simple hot glue the tube to the headband (use a lot of it!). For ribbon, which I found a bit easier in the end, hot glue or tape a piece of ribbon to each side of the inside of the tube. Tie under your chin to wear (recommended), or behind your head, securing with a lot of bobby pins.
Pair with anything yellow you own or can find, and you have a costume, my friends!

Hey Ella! How did you get the piece to stay on your head? Were you able to walk around normally, or were you constantly having to balance it from tipping over (which was my experience)… I love this piece and am so proud of my execution, but when I go to put it on, it does not stay on my head for longer than 2 seconds. I did the ribbon approach instead of the headband and am now looking for success stories of how they got it to actually be wearable. Thanks for any tips!

This is such a cute idea! but making the hat was WAY harder than it seems in the picture. I bought xl posterboard and only the big and first layer of medium sized ones fit on it. my neighbor came over to ask if I was okay BC I was screaming from stress ?

Hi Grace! Oh no!!! I’m so sorry to hear you’ve had so much trouble with it! The tallest leaf should be about 20″ tall, and the poster board I used was standard size which is about 22″x28″ so it should definitely fit! If your poster board is smaller, perhaps just make the hat with slightly smaller leaves, it would like just as awesome I’m sure!! Hope that helps!

I just made this and the first leaves were a little tricky to get on but easy peasy from there. Took me s out an hour and a half when all was said and done. I attached two sets of black ribbon to the base and plan to tie one under my chin and one behind my head under my hair. Seemed secure when I tested. I’m very excited to wear it out tomorrow! For the headband, what if you just cut two small slits in the sides of the headpiece, thread your headband through, and THEN hot-glue it on? That way it would stay upright more stably. Just a thought.
